While much of the focus will be on a loaded offense, the Cleveland Browns have the potential to have a league-leading defense as well.

Much of the focus this offseason for the Cleveland Browns has been on the offensive side of the ball. That certainly is deserving after the additions of Austin Hooper, Jack Conklin, and drafting Jedrick Wills Jr this offseason. In 2019 the offense was expected to skyrocket with Odell Beckham added to the roster, but instead was a major disappointment.

The offense looked lost and lethargic most of the season. So many times, the defense would create a turnover and the Browns would be forced to punt it back just three downs later. Many of the issues stem from Freddie Kitchens being overwhelmed by trying to call plays and be the head coach. While it remains to be seen if new head coach Kevin Stefanski or offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt will call plays in 2020, either way, the offense will be in much better hands.

One thing is for certain, Joe Woods will be calling the plays on defense in 2020. There are still a few holes that need to be figured out, but it feels like additions by general manager Andrew Berry are complete. The Browns defense was equally as disappointing as the offense in 2019. The pass-rush was nonexistent at times, and the front seven struggled to stop the run.

Steve Wilks, who was the defensive coordinator for only one year had the 20th ranked defense in the league and gave up the third-most rushing yards in 2019. Injuries certainly didn’t help, as cornerbacks Greedy Williams and Denzel Ward each missed multiple games last season. Then an Olivier Vernon nagging knee injury and Myles Garrett suspension lead to the final demise of the defense as well.

With new leadership and a healthy squad to start 2020, look for Woods and company to play with a chip on their shoulder. The defense has heard all year that they need help at secondary and linebacker and will be ready to prove the fans wrong. Here are three reasons why the Browns defense will be top-10 for the 2020 season
