After tearing down their roster and rebuilding with young talent, the time has come for the Cleveland Browns to start negotiating contract extensions with their young core players. The first player on the list is defensive end Myles Garrett.

Garrett has emerged as one of the best young defensive ends in the NFL and he has the potential of being a perennial Defensive Player of the Year candidate, so it makes sense for the Browns to try to get a deal done as soon as they can.

The Browns and Garrett’s agent Bus Cook have been working on an extension for Garrett this offseason. However, it has been relatively unknown where the negotiations stand with training camp one month away.

In today’s featured article, the belief is the Browns are closer to an extension with Garrett than many would believe.

Aditi Kinkhabwala: Browns are closer to a Myles Garrett contract extension than you’d expect – 92.3 The Fan

"Aditi gave her thoughts about athletes going out to clubs and bars during the pandemic, if the NFL should move the season back to October, if we should be worried that Myles Garrett is playing and where his contract extension talks are."

The Browns were reportedly willing to offer Garrett an extension worth $25 million a year, which would be the highest for an NFL edge rusher. If the Browns do offer Garrett a deal in that range, it would make sense as to why the team and Garrett could be close to a deal.

Mailbag: What are the chances of the season being played? What happens if the NFL and NFLPA can’t agree on work conditions? Who are candidates for an extension this season? – Scott Petrak, BrownsZone

"Tretter, Cleveland’s starting center and the recently elected NFLPA president, has been the most cautious voice in the discussion, which he should be. His job with the union is to fight for the best interest and safety of all the players, and he’s committed to doing just that."

J.C. Tretter has been extremely vocal about ensuring the safety of the players since becoming the NFLPA president. With his cautious approach and the rise in coronavirus cases among athletes, it would not be surprising to see a potential delay to the NFL season.
