The Cleveland Browns are aiming to be a playoff contender in 2020, and they have the talent to do so. With several playmakers on offense and some young stars on the defense, the Browns certainly have a chance to be surprising in 2020.

However, Cleveland’s roster is not littered with veterans, as they still are relying on young talent on both sides of the ball. This will create opportunities for competition during training camp for multiple starting jobs.

One of the positions that is the most wide open is at linebacker, where Cleveland will have three new starters in 2020 after all three starters during Week 1 of the 2019 season were all let go this offseason.

Today’s featured article discusses the competition at linebacker and how Jacob Phillips could be a surprising starter for the Browns defense.

Browns rookie Jacob Phillips has same chance to start as Mack Wilson & Sione Takitaki: ‘It’s an open competition’ says LB coach – Mary Kay Cabot, Cleveland.com

"“Jacob has the skillset for all of those, and that’s what we wanted,‘’ Tarver said. “We wanted football intelligence. We wanted length and speed. He has those. What I mean by length is how well you’re able to separate from blockers and things like that, which he’s done. He did that pretty well at LSU.‘’"

Every rookie in the NFL will be dealing with the challenge of adjusting to the NFL virtually prior to training camp, which will cause them to be thrown into the fire once training camp starts. The Browns may be holding a open competition at linebacker, but the virtual offseason could make it difficult for Phillips as he had no on-field work with the Browns staff.

3 goals for Kareem Hunt in 2020 for the Browns

After missing half of the season in 2019, Kareem Hunt quickly became a difference maker for the Browns offense. Dan Gilinsky lays out three goals for Hunt in his first full season with the Cleveland Browns.

Cleveland Browns gearing up for training camp with new safety measures in place – Matt Wright, FOX 8

"“We’re going to screen, there’s going to be frequent testing, we’re going to ask employees and players to wear masks whenever possible,” Sheehan said. “We’re really going to ask them to stay six feet apart whenever possible. We are going to limit group size to the extent we can and do our best to mitigate the spread of the virus.”"

Whenever the NFL opens up team facilities to players and allow them to return, it will be somewhat difficult to manage the health and safety of each player. With the difficulty of trying to keep players spaced out, it could cause the NFLPA and president J.C. Tretter to wait for better health and safety protocols before sending players back to facilities.
