The Cleveland Browns have a lot of talent on the edge with Myles Garrett, the No. 1 overall pick in 2017, and Olivier Vernon, a former Pro Bowler. Garrett was coming on strong last season and had 10 sacks in his first 10 games but then was suspended for six games by the NFL for his role in a fight with Mason Rudolph of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

As for Vernon, he had the worst statistical season of his career in 2019. In his first year with the Browns, Vernon had just 26 tackles with 3.5 sacks. He too missed six games, but unlike Garrett, his issues were due to durability as a knee injury slowed him down.

Garrett should come into 2020 as if he was shot out of a cannon. The league punished him harshly for his role in the fight and he’s the type of player who will say little but will let his actions do the talking as he puts that behind him. He’s also motivated by a contract negotiation that has already begun.

As for Vernon, 2020 is the final season of his contract and there’s already been speculation on whether or not he would play this year for the Browns. The closer it gets to the start of training camp, the less likely it is that he’ll be released but there’s still nearly no chance at all that Vernon will be on the team in 2021. And Chad Thomas, the third-round pick from 2018, isn’t likely to step in and replace him.

For that reason, the Browns use their second pick in this mock draft on Washington’s Joe Tyron. At 6-foot-4 and 251-pounds, Tyron looks the part of an NFL edge rusher and he started to break out for the Huskies in 2020 with eight sacks. Pairing him with Garrett should give them the tandem they hoped to have found when John Dorsey traded for Vernon last season.
