Which remaining free agents should the Cleveland Browns have interest in?

Cleveland Browns fans finally have some excitement with training camp slated for July 28. While there were previously concerns on if training camp would occur, the starting of MLB and NBA seasons at the end of July is a positive sign.

The MLB is set to start on July 23 and the NBA will start on July 30. To this point, there is no reason to believe they won’t stay on schedule. COVID-19 has regained some steam around the country, but most leagues appear to have a proper protocol in place to allow a season.

While it remains to be seen how many preseason games will be played or if fans will be inside NFL stadiums in 2020, it does feel like a 16-game regular season should happen (fingers crossed). A fall without sports is almost unimaginable, but now fans may end up with a September weekend that includes the NBA Finals, MLB, and a slate of NFL games.

As the start of the NFL season draws nearer, the focus for Browns general manager Andrew Berry shifted from roster additions to retention. The Browns recently inked star pass rusher, Myles Garrett, to a massive five-year, $125 million extension.

Now the focus can turn to the fine-tuning final roster. That process will include many cuts that will be even more difficult without a four-game preseason, as well as late free agent signings to create a game day roster.

Berry was busy early and often this year, upgrading both offensive tackles and tight end via free agency and the 2020 NFL draft. He also addressed holes in the secondary with multiple one-year “prove-it” deals that will likely be short term fixes.

While the list is thin, there is still a decent market of free agents available who could now come at a discount this close to the season. Will Berry be aggressive in trying to be in “win-now” mode with Baker Mayfield still on his rookie deal? The Browns certainly have the cap space for a few more one-year deals, but with a shortened offseason, the concern of the team gelling before the regular season comes into question.

There is no doubt Berry will complete his due diligence on all available free agents, but here is a short list to keep your eyes on as Browns fans.
