3 Players who will shine early at Cleveland Browns training camp
By Randy Gurzi
1. Baker Mayfield, QB
The Cleveland Browns have made more than their fair share of mistakes when it comes to drafting and developing quarterbacks. With Baker Mayfield, they hit on the pick but the development part has been a disaster.
Cleveland has failed Mayfield in every way. They gave him a terrible offensive line which left him open to brutal sacks from the opposing team. They’ve also changed his coaches at an alarming rate as he will enter 2020 with his fourth head coach in just three seasons in the league.
That kind of uncertainty is enough to force even the best quarterback into mediocrity. Having said that, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
Kevin Stefanski, the newest head coach in Cleveland, has already proven he can help a quarterback take their next step. He was wonderful for Kirk Cousins last season with the Minnesota Vikings and his help led Cousins to his most efficient season ever.
That’s why he was hired by the Browns and that’s why it feels as though this time they finally got it right. And while we have to see it to believe it, the truth is there’s no reason not to bank on Mayfield coming into camp looking like a new man.
And it won’t be just the way he looks in this system that’s tailor-made to fit his strengths — which it is. But it will also be due to the work he has put in this offseason.
Mayfield understands he could have been better in 2019 and because of that, he has been quieter than he ever has been. Rather than talking to the media and shooting off great quotes, Mayfield has been working out and preparing for this season.
Already a huge star in Cleveland, the new focus and his fit in Stefanski’s play-action-heavy offense is going to allow Mayfield to shine bright in the team’s 2020 training camp.
