With players around the league having reported to training camp, there have been several players utilizing the league’s opt-out provision due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While some teams have had several players opt-out, the Cleveland Browns have only had a few.

The Browns have only had two players opt-out in the past week, with both players on the offensive line: Drew Forbes and Drake Dorbeck. Between the two players, Forbes was the only one who had the potential of making a contribution for the Browns this season.

The NFL has yet to set a deadline for players to opt out, but the expectation is they will set the deadline for Wednesday. Although the NFL Players Association is unlikely to be happy with this deadline, players will only have a few more days to make a decision.

Today’s featured article discusses if any more Browns could decide to opt out this season and if their decisions are imminent.

Browns Mailbag: How will no preseason games affect roster evaluation? – Andrew Gribble, ClevelandBrowns.com

"Simply put, it will just be one less opportunity for players on the fringe to impress, but Stefanski stressed it will be on the coaches to create more game-like situations on the practice field. That makes how the players perform in practices even more important toward landing a spot on the final roster."

Although teams generally use a player’s performance during practices at training camp to make their roster decisions during final cutdown, but how a player performs during the preseason can help sway a decision. Without any preseason games, it could prove to be difficult for the Browns to decide on close competitions.
