The experienced veteran

One thing the Browns did this offseason was sign someone capable of killing in for Baker Mayfield should something happen. And in doing so, Kevin Stefanski brought in a familiar face.

Case Keenum

When Kevin Stefanski was the quarterback coach for the Minnesota Vikings, they had several quarterbacks come through their doors. And in 2017, there were a lot of moving parts as they had lost Teddy Bridgewater to a knee injury the prior season and replaced him with Sam Bradford. However, Bradford also succumbed to a knee injury and that’s when they turned to Case Keenum.

A former undrafted free agent from Houston, Keenum had just gone 4-5 the prior season with the Los Angeles Rams before losing his job to No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff. He then started 14 games for the Vikings and was 11-3 in those games. He also won their first playoff game, leading them to the NFC Championship Game.

From there, Keenum started 16 games for the Denver Broncos in 2018 and another eight for Washington in 2019. He struggled last season to get any wins but still had decent numbers overall — including an 11-to-5 touchdown-to-interception ratio.

This offseason, Keenum was given an $18 million contract over three seasons, making him a very highly-paid reserve. However, he also gives them a great piece of mind.

Should something happen to Baker Mayfield, the Browns will be in good hands. Keenum has 62 starts under his belt and knows Stefanski’s system well. That’s about the best thing you could ask for in your No. 2 quarterback.
