Dud: Case Keenum, Quarterback

When the Browns added Case Keenum, it was to give them a quality backup to Baker Mayfield. Keenum has been in the NFL for nine seasons and has appeared in 67 games with 62 starts. In all, he has a record of 27-35, and outside of the 1-7 disaster in Washington last season, he has always been competitive with his worst record being 6-10 the year prior with Denver.

On top of his ability as a quarterback, Keenum brought in plenty of knowledge of the system Kevin Stefanski is set to install. Back in 2017, both Stefanski and Keenum were on the same Minnesota Vikings squad and Keenum was 11-3 that season as a starter and took them to the NFC Championship Game.

Now with the Browns, he’s expected to help move Baker Mayfield along and while he might be doing that in the meeting room, Keenum is reportedly struggling on the field. Keenum has had several picks in camp and so far, there’s a belief he’s being outplayed by Garrett Gilbert — who was the No. 2 quarterback last season for Cleveland.

Despite these reports, there’s no reason to worry too much about Keenum. He’s a capable quarterback who is simply adjusting to a new team. Perhaps his experience with Stefanski had expectations higher than they should have been.

If he’s ever called upon in a regular-season game, Keenum has proven he can get the job done. And that’s what really matters.
