Round 2, Pick 49: Jay Tufele, DT, USC

There may not be a position group on the Browns’ roster more mangled and shallow than the defensive tackle group. Even after signing Andrew Billings and drafting Elliot, the depth is still shattered along the interior of their defensive line.

Billings has opted out of the 2020 season, leaving the roster with just Sheldon Richardson, Larry Ogunjobi, and Elliot as viable options along their defensive front. While Billings is coming back next season after opting out, Ogunjobi is on the last year of his deal and coming off an abysmal 2019 campaign, and Richardson has an out of his relatively expensive contract after the season.

The Browns are in a position to upgrade their defensive line early and often in 2021. Here in the second round of this 2021 NFL Mock Draft, the Browns land the talented USC defensive tackle Jay Tufele in hopes of bolstering a weak link on their roster.

Tufele has also opted out of the 2020 season and declared for the draft after two seasons with the Trojans. During his career, Tufele has racked up six and a half sacks and 10 tackles for loss from his stop along the USC front. He can play from the three-technique and the one-technique and can take on multiple blockers in order to clear lanes for the linebackers and safeties to make plays.

He would be a welcome addition in Cleveland.
