Cleveland Browns defense could get back on track in week 3

The Cleveland Browns defense could get back on track vs. Washington
The Cleveland Browns were able to get a victory in week two vs. the Cincinnati Bengals, however, the defense was torched by Lamar Jackson in week one and Joe Burrow in Week 2. Through two weeks the defense has given up 68 points while surrendering 179 rushing yards and 555 passing yards.
Through two games the game plan has been consistent for opponents, and that is a quick passing game across the middle of the field. This tactic keeps Myles Garrett from feasting on the quarterback and exposes the Browns weakest position on defense, which is linebacker (especially in coverage).
While the offense looked to turn the page on Thursday night, it was still frustrating as a fan to watch a rookie quarterback march down the field every possession. But there is good news around the corner. The depleted defense could get Mack Wilson (LB), Jacob Phillips (LB), Kevin Johnson (DB), and Greedy Williams (DB) for next week’s matchup vs the Washington Football team according to head coach Kevin Stefanski.
Johnson was a camp standout but has yet to see the field with an abdominal injury. Wilson was a rookie standout last year, but a knee injury in camp has kept him off the field. There’s a fear he won’t be 100 percent healthy, but his leadership on the field should lift the entire squad. Williams is coming off a shoulder injury and has been successful when on the field. This year will be huge to prove he can finally stay healthy. The rookie third-round pick, Phillips, showed some early promise flying around the field before an injury in week one.
While the defense has struggled, look for them to turn the page in week three with familiar faces returning and a struggling offense in Washington. Although they were able to beat the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 1, quarterback Dwayne Haskins only completed 55 percent of his passes for 178 yards. Garrett and company should force quick passes which will help the secondary tighten up coverage and force accurate passes.
With the offense finally turned the page, it is now time for the defense with an extended ten-day break. Injuries have been difficult, but Stefanski has been adamant that won’t be an excuse for the 2020 Browns. Look for three-plus sacks and an interception for the Browns defense next weekend as they get their confidence back.
