Andrew Berry’s work of overhauling the Cleveland Browns

After a season where the trenches were neglected by Dorsey, it was obvious to Berry what his priority must be. With a large emphasis on the offensive and defensive line, the Browns are now reaping rewards of the fruit of Berry’s labor.

This offseason, the Browns went out and spent big money on former first rounder and Pro Bowl right tackle Jack Conklin, a significant upgrade over Chris Hubbard from a year ago. After opting to let Greg Robinson walk (and his subsequent arrest), Berry then landed Alabama offensive tackle Jedrick Wills with the 10th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. At this point in the season, the offensive line has been the least of the worries for the Browns in 2020.

Along their defensive trenches, Berry did not look to add another starter, but instead build a formidable rotation. Porter Gustin, a Dorsey carryover, has worked his way into a consistent rotational role with the team, but Berry went out and signed Andrew Billings (who we will have to wait a year to see after opting out) and Adrian Clayborn to bolster the depth behind their starters. He then landed Jordan Elliott, who is grading out as a top rookie thus far, in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft to solidify the four-man rotation at defensive tackle.

Needing to pivot after Billings opted out, Berry then claimed Vincent Taylor off of waivers after he was cut by the Bills, and he has stepped in and proven to be a solid rotational asset as well.

Defensively behind that unit, Berry upgraded the secondary with the likes of Grant Delpit, Kevin Johnson, Karl Joseph, Andrew Sendejo, and the newest member Ronnie Harrison. Once this secondary returns to full healthy, getting Johnson and Greedy Williams back this week, and hopefully getting Harrison up to speed in his third week with the team, we may see a significant jump out of this unit.
