How Baker Mayfield ranks among AFC North quarterbacks
By Mitch Zoloty
Interception Percentage
Interception percentage is very similar to touchdown percentage, as it shows the percentage of passes a quarterback is throwing an interception on, instead of total interceptions. This helps account for workload differences and other factors like that.
When looking at total interceptions on the season, Lamar Jackson and Big Ben both have only thrown one so far, and Baker and Joe Burrow have both only thrown two.
"Ben Roethlisberger (0.9%) Lamar Jackson (1%) Joe Burrow (1.1%) Baker Mayfield (1.7%)"
Each of these quarterbacks is having a phenomenal season in terms of interception percentage. All four of them rank within the top 15 of the NFL. Big Ben is ranked fifth in the NFL, Lamar is seventh, Joe Burrow is eighth, and Baker is 14th in the league.
One of the biggest indicators of who wins a game is whoever wins the turnover battle. Mayfield has had a problem with interceptions throughout his career, and seeing him in the top half of the league in terms of this statistic is very promising in terms of his development. While it would be awesome to see him get this number down, even more, 1.7 percent is already the lowest of his NFL career. For comparison, throughout Ben Roethlisberger’s NFL career, he has only had two seasons below the 1.7 percent mark that he played in more than 3 games.
This statistic speaks a lot more to how well the AFC North quarterbacks have been playing this season than to say Baker isn’t performing well enough. The truth is, all four of these quarterbacks are playing at a playoff-caliber level of play. While the Bengals are unlikely to be a playoff team, the rest of the division easily could be in the playoffs and it’s currently a shakeup for who is going to actually win the division.
