Myles Garrett won the AFC Defensive Player of the Week

After getting two sacks, including one strip-sack, three tackles, one tackle for loss, and one quarterback hit against the Dallas Cowboys, Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett was awarded the AFC Defensive Player of the Week award for this past week.

Garrett now has five sacks on the season, leading the NFL, along with three strip-sacks (also leading the NFL), 11 tackles, two tackles for loss, and six quarterback hits on the season. If it wasn’t clear before the past game, it should be now: Myles Garrett should be the AFC Defensive Player of the Year.

According to The Football Database, Myles Garrett himself has caused more takeaways through four weeks than the entire Cowboys, Broncos, Raiders, and Texans defenses. If Myles Garrett alone was a defense, he would rank 24th in the NFL in turnovers, tied with the Cardinals, Packers, Jaguars, Chargers, and Vikings.

This type of production out of a defensive end is something that the NFL only sees once or twice every decade. With the schedule relatively easy from here on out, this likely won’t be Myles’ only AFC Defensive Player of the Week award.

Right now feels like a good time to remind people that there were fans who wanted the Cleveland Browns to select Mitch Trubisky over Myles Garrett in the 2017 NFL Draft. Trubisky has just been benched by the Chicago Bears in favor of Nick Foles, while Garrett is on pace to have 20 sacks this season.

Garrett has been arguably the most valuable defensive player in the NFL this season, and the production that he has brought to this lackluster Cleveland Browns defense is a big reason why the team is currently sitting at 3-1, instead of possibly being 1-3 or worse.

While the season is only a quarter of the way through, Myles Garrett is having a historic season, and hopefully, national media will catch up and realize that he is the clear cut favorite for AFC Defensive Player of the Year so far.
