Stefanski has Cleveland Browns playing the right way heading into Pittsburgh
By Josh Brown
Defense doing its job
The Browns defense has been a rollercoaster ride this season, but the one constant is turnovers. Even in the Ravens’ loss to start the year, the Browns caused one turnover, and they have done at least that in every game since. The best showing was five turnovers caused by the defense against Washinton.
Overall the defense has caused 12 turnovers through the first five games, placing them as the best in the NFL at causing turnovers per Pro Football Reference. With six fumbles and six interceptions, they have been equally adept in the turnover causing department.
The Myles Garrett effect
The Browns have been an attacking defense. Every time you see someone on top of the quarterback or ball carrier, they are constantly ripping and punching at the ball. While most teams do this, the Browns have been adept at getting that ball out, especially Myles Garrett, who has three strip-sacks in five games.
The pass rush has attacked opposing quarterbacks with 30 hurries ranking first in that aspect and 46 total pressures, which rank fifth according to PFR.
Turnover Margin
So we talked about the Browns defense being No. 1 in creating turnovers. Well, the offense has been solid in not giving them up. Currently, the Browns offense has six turnovers, with most coming in the form of Baker Mayfield interceptions. He has thrown four picks in the first five games of the season. After going two games without an interception, Mayfield threw two against the Colts to fuel a second-half comeback attempt. Even after the two-interception game, Mayfield is at a career-low 2.6 percent interception rate.
The Browns are plus six in turnover margin, so check. One of the three pillars is where it should be as the Browns are tied with the Seattle Seahawks with the best turnover differential in the NFL.
