Cleveland Browns: 3 trade targets on New York Jets amid fire sale
By Cory Kinnan
2. LB Avery Williamson
There is no doubt the Browns have one of the worst linebacking corps in the entire league, with their best option being an aging veteran in Malcolm Smith. Ideally, when he gets healthy, rookie and third round pick Jacob Phillips would give a boost to the unit as he has flashed when healthy already.
However, the Browns must ask if they can conceivably wait for the young players in this unit to pick up the slack. If they decide they cannot wait any longer for the second level of their defense to improve, the Jets have a solid veteran presence they may be willing to trade, and he will likely cost just a day-three pick.
Williamson would only be a rental at this point, in the last year of his contract, but he is making only $2.75 million this season, with a large portion of his contract already paid thus far. If the Browns can land the 28 year old linebacker for just the cost of a late-round pick, they would give themselves the chance at a cost-effective linebacker, and give them a chance to prove they are a desirable destination in free agency as well.
He would immediately be the best linebacker on the roster, and he would give the Browns’ defense a massive boost as soon as he suited up for the Brown and Orange.
