Cleveland Browns: One trade target from all other 31 teams
Tampa Bay safety Mike Edwards hasn’t seen the field much until the last few weeks, but has made the most of it. After a rather quiet rookie season in 2019, Edwards has two interceptions in three defensive games played this season. Edwards finds himself buried on the depth chart, however and should be a target for the Cleveland Browns to improve their secondary.
While Edwards is not seeing much playing time behind Antoine Winfield Jr. and Jordan Whitehead, it’s impressive that he has snagged two interceptions in such few snaps this season. It shows why he was a third-round pick out of Kentucky two years ago, and why he should see the field more.
With the number of injuries in the Browns secondary this season, and the sub-par play by the healthy players, Mike Edwards could be a key addition to a defense looking for answers on the back end. Mike Edwards could help bolster the roster down the stretch for this season and next, and help provide quality depth for when the Browns do get healthy in the future.
Linebacker and edge rusher Vic Beasley signed a one year deal with the Titans following his departure from the Atlanta Falcons this past season. Outside of a huge year in 2016 with 15.5 sacks, Beasley has underperformed, getting only 22 sacks in his other four professional seasons combined. Although he’s off to another slow start this season with the Titans, he may be worth acquiring and seeing if he can provide a spark to a Browns pass rush that desperately needs it.
Beasley does not have any sacks in 2020 in four games played, and while that is concerning to some, he is still worth considering trading for, especially if you’re the Cleveland Browns. Their pass rush outside of Myles Garrett has left something to be desired, and the talent that Beasley has is something worth considering.
Since his contract expires at the end of the season, Beasley could be acquired for a bit cheaper in compensation than other pass rushers on the market, and if it doesn’t pay off, it’s not too much of a burden to carry beyond this year. Sometimes it’s worth trading for a player based on potential and what they’ve done in the past, and hoping that they can find a fit in your system and make an impact like that again. That’s exactly what the Browns should do in this situation with Vic Beasley Jr.
If there’s one thing the Washington Football Team has an abundance of, it’s pass rushers. Year after year, they seem to acquire a young, talented pass rusher at the top of the draft and add it to an already scary defensive front. Because of that, it makes Ryan Anderson an expendable asset for Washington, and as a position of need for Cleveland, they should strongly consider acquiring the edge rusher.
The defensive end/outside linebacker combo is in the final year of his contract with Washington, and being owed less than half a million dollars the rest of this season, would be a good fit to help the front seven of the Cleveland Browns. Considering he currently plays in less than 50 percent of the defensive snaps for the Football Team, he could be looking for a team that will use him more on defense.
Anderson does play a heavy role in the special teams unit for Washington, and could help provide a spark for Cleveland there if he’s acquired. Special teams coach Mike Priefer would likely have a veteran special teams player like Anderson on his units to help coach up many of his young players on the unit.
Even if that’s the only thing that Anderson would provide for the Browns if he’s acquired in a trade, it’s enough for them to look at, as they need help cleaning up their special teams unit as a whole, in addition to their defensive holes.
