Cleveland Browns bye week report cards: Secondary

Sheldrick Redwine- B
A 2019 fourth-rounder, Sheldrick Redwine played well in limited action towards the end of last season, but he didn’t get a single defensive snap in 2020 until injuries to Karl Joseph and Ronnie Harrison forced him onto the field in Week 5 against the Indianapolis Colts, where he picked off a fourth-quarter Philip Rivers pass to essentially seal the game. He started Week 6 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but didn’t play much against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week7, and again went without seeing the field in Week 8 against the Las Vegas Raiders.
It’s very odd that Redwine doesn’t get playing time, since he’s been solid when he’s on the field, just turned 24 this month and has potential, and it’s not like the guy in front of him (Andrew Sendejo) is playing very well. One of the observations about Joe Woods from his time as DC with the Denver Broncos is that he doesn’t trust young players, and is loyal to his veterans to a fault.
That has certainly been the case eight games into his Cleveland tenure, and Redwine is paying the price. Given Andrew Sendejo’s performance and more time for Woods to acclimate to his players, perhaps Redwine will see an increase in playing time over the second half of the season, although one defensive snap per game would qualify.
The Browns secondary is dealing with injuries and will look very different in 2020, but the performance of the players in the group right now has been less than ideal.
