5 Cleveland Browns to watch vs. the Texans
By Greg Newland
3. Baker Mayfield, Quarterback
Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield is almost always in the news. Whether he had a great game, okay game, or horrible game, he seems to always draw the national media attention. However, this week he drew attention for being put on the COVID-19 list for close interaction with someone who tested positive.
The good news is he was taken off the list on Wednesday, and only had to miss Monday and Tuesday’s practice face to face. Obviously, he still attended virtually, but not getting routes in with his receivers and tight ends certainly doesn’t help him get better.
After a strong performance vs. the Cincinnati Bengals in week 7, Mayfield wasn’t quite as strong in the team’s loss vs. the Raiders in week 8. I will argue for Mayfield, that loss was not on him. His receivers and tight ends dropped multiple passes and the Raiders stacked the box with poor weather.
Both would have been tough catches, but Jarvis Landry dropped two touchdowns that would have given the Browns a great chance at winning the game. Additionally, David Njoku dropped a huge third-down pass as the Browns were getting close to field goal position and completely deflated the team.
With that being said, Mayfield is the quarterback of the team. You take the blame when you lose and give credit to the team when you win. Mayfield does that well and will continue to strive to get better. Mayfield needs to be sharp early off the bye. The Texans can score points quickly, so it will be important to not fall behind early.
If the Browns can get a steady run game going, look for Mayfield to shred the Houston defense with play-action passes. Mayfield could be in for a big day with some crucial pieces back in the fold this week.
