3. Andrew Sendejo, Safety

Yet another one-year signing from Andrew Berry makes the list as we get to starting safety Andrew Sendejo. While it’s true that he has not only started all eight games but also played in just about every snap this season, that wasn’t supposed to be the case. Cleveland added Sendejo as a veteran depth piece but they expected their starters to be fellow free-agent addition Karl Joseph and rookie second-round pick Grant Delpit.

Sadly, we never got to see the LSU product hit the field as Delpit suffered a torn Achilles during training camp which ended his season before it ever began. That thrust Sendejo into the starting lineup and through eight games, he’s cemented himself as the most despised defender on this team.

Week after week, Sendejo is involved in a defensive play gone wrong and has surrendered more than his fair share of touchdowns. Oddly enough, defensive coordinator Joe Woods continues to use him as the primary safety despite having Karl Joseph back from a hamstring injury and seeing Ronnie Harrison improve every week since being added before Week 1 in a trade with Jacksonville. Cleveland also has Sheldrick Redwine, who has performed well when relied upon, but their commitment to Sendejo remains strong.

That won’t be the case in 2021 because there’s no way Berry re-signs him. While it’s clear Joe Woods trusts him enough to keep putting him on the field, Berry doesn’t seem to be the kind of general manager who gets sentimental. He’s surely going to add more pieces at safety in the offseason, and when that’s coupled with the return of Delpit, Sendejo should be on the way out.
