A 7-round 2021 Cleveland Browns mock draft heading into Week 10

The Cleveland Browns exit their Week 9 bye with a 5-3 record, and are still in the thick of the playoff hunt, but we can still look forward to the 2021 NFL Draft that is scheduled to be held in Cleveland.

This week’s mock focuses almost entirely on defense, as the Browns should do in April of next year. Today we’ll be using Pro Football Network’s simulator, with the added wrinkle of trades thrown in.

To the collective groan of a good portion of the fanbase, the Browns decide to trade down in the first round. With Miami’s Greg Rousseau and presumably Michigan’s Kwity Paye off the board at this point, Cleveland doesn’t see a slam-dunk EDGE prospect to take in the top 20.

So the team decides to move down seven spots while turning their sixth-rounder into a second-rounder. It may be unpopular with some, but for this value, it’s absolutely the correct move.

Despite receiving a few more offers, Cleveland decides to stay at 24 and get Myles Garrett a running mate. Patrick Jones hasn’t been quite as terrific this season as he was in 2019 (he’s still got eight sacks through eight games, just one-half short of his total from last season), but he has a prototype frame and NFL athleticism.

He also plays the run well, which is a strong part of Olivier Vernon’s game, the player Jones would be replacing. The Browns will be taking a pass-rusher or a defensive back in the first round, and Jones is a name to become very familiar with over the next few months.
