2. Sheldrick Redwine, Safety

The safety play for the Cleveland Browns this season has been suspect. While Ronnie Harrison has been showing improvement every week, they haven’t gotten what they expected out of Karl Joseph at the midway point of the season. There’s also the issue with Andrew Sendejo, the veteran free-agent addition who has struggled week in and week out for Cleveland.

For whatever reason, the Browns have stuck with Sendejo despite his struggles and they only put Harrison on the field when Joseph came down with an injury. As for the next man up, Sheldrick Redwine, he only saw action when Joseph and Harrison were hurt.

And when finally put on the field, Redwine showed up. In a Week 5 win over the Indianapolis Colts, Redwine broke up one pass and had an interception as well as he picked off Philip Rivers.

Since that game, the second-year player hasn’t seen the field as much but that hasn’t stopped the coaching staff from singing his praises. Defensive backs coach Jeff Howard said he has been encouraged by the improvement Redwine has been showing.

The hope now is that this turns into time on the field for Redwine. Both Joesph and Harrison work best closer to the line and we have seen clearly that Sendejo doesn’t exactly excel as the deep safety. Redwine is clearly better in this role and should be given a chance to prove that.
