No. 3: Mayfield’s red zone play for the Browns

It’s not as if Baker Mayfield has necessarily torn it up for Cleveland, but, to a large extent, he’s helped the offense cash in on sudden change chances. And even more so, what’s been a bright spot for him has been his red zone play.

It’s not been Pro Bowl level in this sense, but Mayfield’s had a completion percentage of roughly 61.3 percent in the red zone so far, as opposed to a ghastly 40.5 percent clip in 2019. Mayfield having two awful misses in that Philly game in short range, and really blading a putt on a dish to Austin Hooper obviously was not aiding his case here, but for the most part, he’s been good in the red area in 2020.

And perhaps most importantly, Mayfield’s had 13 touchdowns and no picks thus far in that zone, which even while he’s not the running threat of this guy, is an identical red zone TD-to-INT ratio of Kyler Murray’s of the Arizona Cardinals.

For comparison’s sake, Mayfield had three interceptions in the red zone in 2019, and only Sam Darnold of the New York Jets and Mitch Trubisky of the Chicago Bears, who both mightily struggled, had more.

So let’s just hope without Odell Beckham Jr. from here (ACL) that Mayfield can still be effective in the red zone looking onward, and with the threat of Chubb back in there, to go with Hunt, he seemingly still should be.

Mayfield’s had his ups and downs, but him being very solid in the red zone jumps out as something us Browns fans should be particularly thankful for, as that’s impacted winning for the Orange and Brown.
