Main Takeaways

John Dorsey is gone from Cleveland but his quarterback legacy remains.

He tried to bring as much talent as possible to the quarterback position, subject to budget constraints rather than trying to think of reasons to get rid of quarterbacks.

As far as we know, Andrew Berry has a similar philosophy and may try to add to the quarterback room this off-season. That doesn’t necessarily mean that he is disappointed in Baker Mayfield. Berry’s job is to add talent, not protect egos. The “quarterback controversy” is a fictitious delusion created by weak front offices on bad teams looking for a scapegoat.

Garrett Gilbert may be the best third-string quarterback option available to the Browns, and they should be able to outbid Jerry Jones and the Cowboys, because the Cowboys are strapped for salary cap space.

If there’s a star quarterback available in the draft, the Browns should select him regardless of whether they need a quarterback or not. However, by drafting in the late first round this season, it is unlikely that a reliable starting option will be available.  Because of his familiarity with the Stefanski offense, Gilbert is a better option for them than the vast majority of college options.

The Browns may also look at higher-priced options on the free-agent market. However, despite the pronouncements from some in the media that Baker Mayfield is on his way out, the fact of the matter is that prospective free agents looking for a starting gig do not regard Cleveland as a viable candidate destination. They believe that Mayfield is the entrenched starter and that the first string job is not going to be easy to win. For that matter, it will be tough to dislodge Case Keenum as the second-string quarterback, and it will be very difficult to persuade the Browns that Garrett Gilbert is not the best choice for third string.

In this fan’s eyes, Garrett Gilbert is the most obvious and best option to be the Browns’ third-string quarterback in 2021. This time, however, he needs to be kept on the 53 player active roster to avoid losing him.
