Callie Brownson will fill in for Cleveland Browns as tight end coach

The Cleveland Browns have never been shy when it comes to being diverse, and they’ve proven this true once again. News broke on Saturday that the team will be without tight ends coach Drew Petzing when they play the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Petzing will be at home with his wife, who just gave birth to their first child. With him out, the Browns are turning to Callie Brownson as their fill in. Brownson, who joined the Browns this season has been coaching for a couple of seasons now as she normally operates under the title of chief of staff.

Last season, she was a member of Sean McDermott’s staff with the Buffalo Bills — a job she secured following an internship. Another of her accomplishments came earlier this season when she was part of a historic game in the NFL. Brownson was on the field with Jennifer King of the Washington Football team and official Sarah Thomas. As Jake Trotter of ESPN points out, this was the first time there were opposing female coaches and a female official working in the same game.

"“Brownson, who joined coach Kevin Stefanski’s first-year staff in the offseason, made news earlier this year when she was part of the first game in NFL history with women coaching on both sidelines (Brownson and Washington offensive assistant and intern Jennifer King) with another (Sarah Thomas) on the field officiating.” — Trotter, ESPN"

This weekend was huge for diversity in the sport as the news about Brownson moving up for the weekend came on the same day that Sarah Fuller made history as the first female to ever play for a power five program. Fuller was on the field for Vanderbilt as a placekicker, helping them fill in for several absences.

The Cleveland Browns enter this game with a record of 7-3 and look for their eighth win against a struggling Jaguars franchise. Jacksonville enters the weekend with a mark of 1-8 and they’re one of the teams in play for the No. 1 overall pick.
