The NFL recycles. Cleveland Browns players get picked up by the New England Patriots, helping them to win Super Bowls, and then when they get old, they have to go play for the New York Giants.

Joe Banner sent Emmanuel Acho to the Philadelphia Eagles for running back Dion Lewis back in the Ming Dynasty (well, 2013, which is almost that far back), then promptly cut Lewis. The Eagles actually got the better end of the deal, because Acho played two seasons for Philadelphia. Lewis never played a down for Cleveland.

Lewis was picked up by the New England Patriots after a year out of football. In three seasons with New England, he gained 2,109 yards from scrimmage and picked up a Super Bowl ring for his trouble. New England, of course, uses a running-back-by-committee system in which several running backs are able to contribute, and Lewis’ special skills were more appreciated. In Cleveland, it was more about not being as big as Trent Richardson or Chris Ogbonnaya, Fozzy Whitaker, or Edwin Baker.

In between New England and the Giants, Lewis spent 2018 and 2019 with Tennessee and has now moved on to the Giants.

Lewis is a fast, quick back known for his ability to change directions and catch the ball out of the backfield. He has lost a little bit of that quickness, and so far this season has only 89 yards in 26 attempts, a 3.4 yard/attempt average. He has also caught 17 balls for 113 yards.

He is also being used to return kickoffs, with 15 returns for 328 yards, a 21.9 yard per return average. Hence we will probably hear his number called several times on Sunday.

That brings us to Kevin Zeitler, who has been a standout offensive lineman for the Bengals, Browns, and Giants.
