Baker Mayfield’s 5 best games of the 2020 season
After a difficult 2019 campaign, Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield struggled through his first six games of 2020 before something clicked for him. He’s been one of the league’s best passers since Week 7 and is the biggest reason why the Browns finished 11-5 and made the playoffs. Here are his five best games from the incredibly encouraging 2020 season.
5. Week 12 at Jacksonville Jaguars
Mayfield had some awful misses in this game, including a wide-open touchdown to Rashard Higgins that he overthrew, and an easy third down conversion to Kareem Hunt that was left behind the running back. But he also made some special throws, finishing the game 19 of 29 for 258 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions.
He was far from perfect, but he was still pretty good. This game occurred during the part of the season where Mayfield was playing well and keeping the ball out of harm’s way, but was still too inconsistent, missing the easy throws that he should be making in his sleep, as he put it.
The Jaguars will finish the season as the worst team in the NFL, with the privilege of selecting Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence first overall, and they were missing most of their starting secondary for this game. Even still, Mayfield made some excellent tight-window throws and protected the football. He hadn’t been able to really string together good performances to that point in his career, and this game helped to break that trend.
