Cleveland Browns land Myles Garrett’s partner in Wild Card 2021 NFL mock draft

In a “what have you done for me lately?” world, Shaun Wade would be a Day 3 pick without any fanfare whatsoever. As a boundary corner in 2020, he’s been…not great. He was picked on by the Clemson Tigers on national television in the College Football Playoff and has likely cost himself quite a bit of money returning to school instead of entering the 2020 NFL Draft.
And yet, if the Browns were to select him in the second round, they would be getting a major steal.
Wade made the switch to outside corner in an attempt to prove he was worth a high first-round pick. That plan didn’t work out, but he’s still a first-round talent with a year of excellent tape.
In 2019, Wade rotated between the slot and safety, and was fantastic. He’s a willing and able tackler who blew up screens and played tight coverage inside. His versatility is a perfect fit in defensive coordinator Joe Woods’ scheme, and he’d allow Woods to move other players (like Grant Delpit, hopefully) around both pre and post-snap to confuse offense and take advantage of the diverse skillsets present in the Cleveland secondary.
Wade hasn’t been good in 2020, but he’s been playing out of position. Whichever NFL team smartly takes him and moves him back inside will get a very good player, and the Browns are a smart team with a need at slot.
