Cleveland Browns vs. Chiefs: Stage is set for energetic 2016-style rematch
By Grant Puskar
Baker Mayfield vs Patrick Mahomes has always been fun. Expect nothing less on Sunday.
If you think this Sunday’s game between the Cleveland Browns and Kansas City Chiefs is going to be a slow, low scoring game, think again. When Baker Mayfield and Patrick Mahomes matched up against each other in 2016, it was nothing short of spectacular.
Mayfield and Oklahoma won the game 66-59 and in the win, Mayfield threw for 545 yards and 7 touchdowns. What about his nemesis Mahomes? Well, he just had 734 yards and 5 touchdowns, in the loss. While this rematch in the divisional round shouldn’t get that out of hand, it should still be a high scoring game.
Both teams have weapons. The Chiefs with Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill, two deadly players who can stretch the field. For the Browns, well, we know how many weapons they have. So, what type of matchup will it be?
What type of game will it be?
Gutsy. High scoring. Energetic. Fast-paced. The Browns can compete with anyone. They have put up tons of points on defenses that are way better than this current Chiefs defense. They have new bulletin board material thanks to Sammy Watkins saying the Browns “aren’t competition.”
If it wasn’t last week, this week’s matchup for the Browns is all on house money. Not a lot of people expected Cleveland to defeat the Steelers last week. They did. Nobody expects the Browns to beat the Chiefs this Sunday. What will they do?
“We want more.” That has been the Browns’ motto ever since they entered the playoffs for the first time since 2002. What more can you want this week than defeating the defending champs and punching your ticket to the AFC Championship game?
Everyone just has to do their part. The Chiefs are not unbeatable. In their last seven games, they have won by an average of around four points. Get up on them. Get some stops and don’t look back. Playing from behind is not ideal with the Chiefs and not something you want to get yourself into.
Stick to what has worked all season long. Pound the ball with Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt until the passing game opens up and let Mayfield loose. On the defensive end, the last time these two teams met, Denzel Ward was able to keep Tyreek Hill in check. Ward will need to step up and have a big game to help slow Mahomes and their offense down.
The same motto applies this week; it is time for the Browns to go shock the world again.
