5 star players for the Cleveland Browns to target in free agency
By Nick Pedone
The 2020 season was a historic one for the Cleveland Browns.
It was a season in which the team exercised their demons by winning a playoff game against Ben Roethlisberger in Heinz Field, established a franchise quarterback and head coach duo and completely reversed the culture inside Berea.
However, a few glaring issues prevailed, especially in the Cleveland Browns 22-17 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the divisional round of the NFL Playoffs.
The Browns will likely bring a nearly overhauled defense to Berea for the start of training camp this summer. Not only will youngsters like Greedy Williams and Grant Delpit regain health, but the Browns will probably elect to let some of the veterans such as Andrew Sendejo, Kevin Johnson, and B.J. Goodson find new homes in the NFL.
Several key pieces to the Browns’ newfound success become free agents this offseason.
Right guard Wyatt Teller, wide receiver Rashard Higgins, cornerback Terrance Mitchel, and strong safety Karl Joseph are all impactful players that will need to be renewed or find new homes. Almost surely, some of the players on expired contracts will be brought back. Additionally, franchise cornerstone pieces like Baker Mayfield, Nick Chubb and Denzel Ward are eligible to cash in on huge paydays.
Currently, the Browns are in a decent position when it comes to open cap space. The team will not be strapped for cash like the Pittsburgh Steelers or New Orleans Saints. While it is still not completely clear what the salary cap will look like due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Over The Cap explains each team’s financial situation in this chart.
Let’s take a peek at some potential free agents for general manager Andrew Berry to acquire this offseason.
