Cleveland Browns: 3 perfect fits to target in 2021 free agency
By Zane Harris
1. Shaquil Barrett, EDGE
The final player that the Cleveland Browns should keep their eye on is Shaquil Barrett. Barrett is probably the least likely signing for the Browns to pull off, however, if they are able to, Barrett would do wonders for the team.
The first obstacle standing in the Browns’ way of getting Barrett is the fact he is currently playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They are slated to play in the Super Bowl which is the goal of every team at the beginning of the year.
It’s very unlikely that Barrett will want to leave a winning situation like the Buccaneers for any team in the near future.
The second thing that is holding the Browns back from signing Barrett is how much money he will likely get next season. Pro Football Focus predicts that he will resign with the Buccaneers on a multi-year deal worth $16 million a year.
While it is technically possible that the Browns could do this with the cap space they have right now, it is very likely they will not. Signing Barrett would leave almost no room for other acquisitions in free agency. Along with this, it would greatly inhibit the Browns from giving key players contract extensions.
However, if they are able to somehow land Barrett on a team-friendly deal, he is the perfect player for the Browns. He is able to play both linebacker and defensive end.
With Olivier Vernon suffering a brutal injury at the end of the season, it is likely he will be sidelined for most of the season. Having someone like Barrett who can fill holes in the roster makes him that much more valuable.
