Cleveland Browns defensive back-heavy 7-round 2021 NFL mock draft
By Sam Penix
The third and final Syracuse DB in this mock, Trill Williams is a great athlete at 6-2, 198 pounds with significant snaps at outside corner, slot corner, and safety. That versatility will help him earn playing time while the coaching staff decides what his best positional fit is.
The Browns won’t (and shouldn’t) invest much into the linebacker position, but it does have to be addressed at some point, since B.J. Goodson and Malcolm Smith (two of last year’s starters) are free agents, and players like Mack Wilson are not guaranteed to make the roster.
Garret Wallow is a converted safety, so he will at least be able to provide serviceable play in coverage, even if he isn’t the best against the run. Perhaps if his name were spelled with two “T”s, he would be taken higher.
Bobby Brown stands 6-4, 325 pounds, and is a very good run defender as a 1-tech. He isn’t the most explosive player, but he is instinctive and strong with the ability to prove three-down play. His motor tends to run hot and cold, so the Browns would need to make sure they are comfortable with Brown the competitor. If they are, he’d be a great addition to a defensive interior that needs some talent.
With this class, the Browns would have a rebuilt secondary ready to help the defense play at a league-average level, and the team was able to add two offensive playmakers in the process.
