3. Kevin Johnson – Cornerback

While this one may be a bit surprising because he was on the Browns roster in 2020, I believe resigning Kevin Johnson to another one or two-year deal would be perfect for the Browns. He had a strong year in 2020 but was limited in production because of injuries and having to play out of position.

Unfortunately, the former first-round pick by the Houston Texans will likely never live up to that expectation, he is good enough to be a starter in the NFL. He was limited to 13 games of action this year and was forced to be a starting corner in six of those games. Johnson is much more suited in the slot and would have a much stronger performance if he was able to play in position.

Cleveland will have a good shot at bringing Johnson back at a similar $3.5 million per year contract and then focus on finding a true second corner behind Ward and letting Johnson focus all his attention on the fifth defensive back title.

The real question is who will that second cornerback be? Many believe it could be Greedy Williams, but injuries have really limited his action as he missed all of 2020 with a nerve injury. There is likely concern that his shoulder will never be the same.

Others believe the Browns may be in the market for a cornerback in the first or second round of the 2021 NFL draft. I’m in the camp of re-signing Johnson and giving Williams another year to prove himself. But the doctors are likely giving Berry better information on what the odds are of Williams ever being fully healthy again.
