4 under the radar players that could be a fit for the Cleveland Browns
By Greg Newland
1. Neville Hewitt – Linebacker
One interesting name that has caught my eye is linebacker Neville Hewitt from the New York Jets. Hewitt is another undrafted player that has spent six years in the league with two different teams. In the last two seasons, Hewitt has had the opportunity to start in 28 games and has been a tackling machine.
With 75 tackles including six tackles for loss in 12 starts in 2019, Hewitt had a monster year in 2020 with 16 starts, and 134 tackles with 91 being solo and six going for loss. The two big questions with Hewitt. One, is he a tackling machine on a bad defense? Two, how bad will the Jets try and bring him back.
With what the Browns will have at the linebacker position in 2021, Hewitt is certainly worth the risk especially with his price tag being in the lower range for the position. Hewitt still has a ton of upside and could be a great partner in crime with Jacob Phillips.
Remember, Malcolm Smith and B.J. Goodson are both going to be free agents and it seems unlikely that either return. Statistically, Goodson had a great year, but in the Browns scheme, he just isn’t athletic enough to be the difference-maker the Browns need.
It seems very likely that Berry will draft a linebacker in 2021, possibly in the first few rounds, but with Mack Wilson and Sione Takitaki not turning out to be tremendous players, a little depth and competition in camp could be just what the Browns need to improve the position.
