Cleveland Browns: 3 reasons Odell Beckham and Jarvis Landry might be split up in 2021
By Randy Gurzi
1. Kevin Stefanski’s system
Let’s say the Browns do add another wide receiver who is able to stretch the field, that makes it even less likely both OBJ and Jarvis Landry stick with the team. The fact is, adding another wideout means one of these two would move to the bench — with Landry being the prime candidate.
While there’s an argument that he would be a great third wideout, Sam Penix of DPD argues that he wouldn’t have such a role in the Browns offense simply due to Kevin Stefanski’s lack of three-wide sets. His belief is that Landry doesn’t fit long-term under the current head coach.
"“The problem with Landry is that he doesn’t fit what the Browns offense is moving towards. With the Minnesota Vikings in 2019, Stefanski utilized three WR sets on 25 percent of his plays, as Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs were his only legitimate weapons. Last season with the Browns, Stefanski ran 11 personnel 42 percent of the time, and actually slightly increased that number after Odell Beckham Jr. was injured.” — Penix, DPD"
He’s right that the Cleveland offense utilizes extra tight ends much more than a third wideout and for that reason, it doesn’t make much sense at all for the Browns to be paying $30.5 million for their two starters.
When all three of these reasons are put together, it makes it seem highly unlikely for the good friends to play together for a third season.
