3 players who could fix the Cleveland Browns linebacker unit
Sign LB Jayon Brown
If the Browns opt-out of drafting a linebacker early in the draft, they also have the option to sign someone in free agency. Jayon Brown would be the best young talent on the market that fits the Browns’ needs.
Brown does have a hefty price tag. He’s coming off of his rookie contract and is expecting his first big payday. It is reasonable to expect that he will land a contract somewhere between $10 and $13 million per year. The Browns front office has already shown that they don’t see the linebacker position as something worth much money, so it is hard to see them paying this much for a player like Brown. However, they may see the position as something that is worth more money after how they struggled last season.
If the Browns were to bring Brown in for 2021, he would fit nicely into the system. His expertise is in coverage, which the Browns need dearly. He has been consistent and reliable in covering running backs out of the backfield as well as wide receivers running shallow routes.
All in all, Jayon Brown would be a great addition to the Browns linebacker room. The issue is going to be whether or not Andrew Berry and his staff are willing to spend the money it will take to get Brown or if they are again going to look for cheaper fixes at linebacker.
