26 cornerbacks for the Cleveland Browns to target in free agency
NFL teams can begin legally tampering on March 15th, which means things will start to happen before then. The Cleveland Browns have quite a bit of work to do in free agency this offseason, especially in the secondary. They currently have one cornerback they can rely on in 2021; Denzel Ward. Here are 26 veterans who could provide at least quality depth.
26. Patrick Peterson – Arizona Cardinals – 31
One of the best defenders of the 2010s, Peterson’s play has fallen off quite dramatically over the past two seasons. The Browns already have approximately 38 LSU players, so what’s one more? Depending on his cost, perhaps Peterson could provide solid value as a No. 2 corner, no longer covering the opposing team’s top target.
25. Brian Poole – New York Jets – 28
Poole was one of the NFL’s best slot corners in 2019, but his market wasn’t as large as expected, so he returned to the Jets on a one-year $5 million deal. He did miss seven games, but played just as well as he did the season before. He’s one of the top players on the market, and should be due for a long-term contract. The slot position is a starting one, and should be valued accordingly.
24. Mackensie Alexander – Cincinnati Bengals – 27
Another quality slot, Mackensie spent four seasons with the Minnesota Vikings before earning $4 million with the Bengals in 2020. He played well, allowing just 9.5 yards per catch and one touchdown. He’s one of many good options to replace Kevin Johnson.
