Daily Dawg Tags: Cleveland Browns looking to make a splash at EDGE in free agency
By Randy Gurzi
The Daily Dawg Tags bring you all the Cleveland Browns news you need to know including a look at some big-name defensive ends being targeted in free agency
Myles Garrett is a potential Defensive Player of the Year, but the Cleveland Browns still would like to pair him with another stud. And after releasing Adrian Clayborn — and with Olivier Vernon headed to free agency — they’re prepared to hit the open market to find that second pass rusher.
Armed with roughly $25 million in cap space, the Browns could look to make a splash ‚— and that $25 million is before making any moves to restructure salaries and create more space.
With that money, it’s likely they go after a defensive end and Mary Kay Cabot has listed some names to include Carl Lawson, Bud Dupree, Von Miller, and Haason Reddick as possible players that could be on general manager Andrew Berry’s radar.
That story and more can be found in today’s Daily Dawg Tags.
Cleveland Browns News
"“Lawson, 25, is one of least half a dozen edge-rushers still on the Browns’ radar heading into free agency next week after the tagging deadline passed.”"
Carl Lawson is the first player Mary Kay mentioned and he should be the No. 1 target. He fits this defense perfectly and is still a young player about to hit his prime. He and Garrett could also benefit from working together, as it would provide each with many more one-on-one battles.
"“So, instead of our esteemed panel of Jason Gibbs, Nathan Zegura and Andrew Gribble making selections for the entire first round, we’re narrowing our focus to the area of the first round that ultimately will matter most for the Browns. We’re getting things rolling at No. 19, the first spot held by a team that made the playoffs in 2020.”"
Zaven Colins (Gribble), Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah (Zegura), and Jaycee Horn (Gibbs) were the picks by the three writers. Clearly, defense is on everyone’s minds, even if we can’t all agree on which player should be taken.
Cleveland Browns WR Switzer’s baby out of hospital after surgery — AP, Via FOX 8
"“Cleveland Browns wide receiver Ryan Switzer says his 9-month-old son, Christian, is home from the hospital after undergoing surgery to stop bleeding.Switzer posted a short video and message on Twitter showing his son playing with toys on the floor following his health scare.”"
Some things are bigger than sports. This news is better than anything else we will hear all week in regards to this team. The Dawg Pound — and many other NFL fans — were sending the Switzer family support and we all can breathe a sigh of relief and give thanks that young Christian is back home.
4 players of interest who escaped franchise tag
Cleveland didn’t franchise tag any of their players but that doesn’t mean they weren’t paying attention on Tuesday. Here are four players who escaped the tag that could be added to the Browns — and some were the same players mentioned earlier in the Mary Kay article.
Browns should pursue Carlos Dunlap
Former Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Carlos Dunlap is available after being released by the Seahawks — who added him for a playoff run in 2020 — and Nick Swanson believes the Browns should be interested.
