The Daily Dawg Tags bring you all the Cleveland Browns news you need to know, including a look at how Andrew Berry is approaching defense in free agency

We all know that the Cleveland Browns have been zeroed in on defense this offseason — and for good reason. Cleveland struggled mightily on that side of the ball, so general manager Andrew Berry decided to go all-in during free agency to improve.

Berry added players at all three levels and his main focus seemed to be getting faster in the secondary while also trying to find players (Takk McKinley, Malik Jackson) who could force the ball out faster.

The good thing though, is they have been incredibly smart. Cleveland might have looked at several big-name players (such as J.J. Watt) but they refuse to overspend. That, in itself, deserves some praise.

It’s also the main topic of discussion in the featured article for today’s Daily Dawg Tags.

What I’m hearing about Andrew Berry’s approach to defense in free agency – Terry’s Talkin’ Browns — Terry Pluto, Cleveland.com

"Or as one source said, “There’s a difference between being aggressive and stupid in free agency. The Browns have been aggressive the last two years, but stayed away from stupid.”"

We can argue the intelligence behind free agency moves from the previous regime until we are blue in the face but there’s no reason to do that. Instead, we should be happy that Andrew Berry is not only addressing the team’s needs, but he’s also making sure his moves are smart. That’s why there’s no fear that their 11 win season from 2020 will turn out to be a fluke.

Signing John Johnson named Browns smartest offseason move so far — Jeff Risdon, Browns Wire

"“According to Bleacher Report, it’s the biggest fish the Browns have landed: signing safety John Johnson. Cleveland added the Rams starter on a three-year deal worth $33.75 million to upgrade the back end of the secondary.”"

Risdon looks at a Bleacher Report article that praises the signing of Johnson. It’s hard to find anyone who didn’t like it, and this is another example of Berry being praised for his smart moves.

Hue Jackson: “Soon Enough” People Will Be Held Accountable In Cleveland — Rocco Nuosci, Browns Nation

"“Hue’s been painted as a villain of sorts since leaving Cleveland, responsible for delaying the start of Baker Mayfield’s career in the eyes of the Browns faithful.Of course, 1-31 can never be forgotten.”"

Jackson sent out a cryptic tweet saying people in Cleveland will be held accountable. It’s hard to say what he’s talking about but it’s fair to say that the relationship between him and the ownership group in Cleveland is beyond repair. Personally, I have always wished the best for Jackson but he really needs to let things go with the Browns.

Diving into Cleveland Browns desire to land Jadeveon Clowney

It’s the second season in a row that Cleveland is trying to land Jadeveon Clowney and one fan asked why they’re so “obsessed” with him. Is it really an obsession, or is the front office just zeroed in on a player they believe can help them improve?

Next. Where do Cleveland Browns still need to improve?. dark

Undrafted free agents are Cleveland Browns key to 2021 NFL draft

Elliot Kennel is all about the undrafted free agents. In fact, he thinks landing them will be the key to adding young (affordable) depth in 2021.
