Round 4, Pick 132: Robert Hainsey, OT, Notre Dame

Chris Hubbard ended up being a blessing for the Browns in 2020 but he’s coming off a serious knee injury suffered late in the year. The hope is that he will be fine and will continue to be the team’s Swiss Army Knife on the bench — capable of playing both guard and tackle.

Having said that, Cleveland does need to protect themselves with more depth, especially after losing Kendall Lamm in free agency. That’s the goal here as they take Robert Hainsey from Notre Dame with their second pick in the fourth.

He could be a decent fit in Bill Callahan’s zone-blocking scheme and really if anyone can get the most out of a young tackle, it’s Callahan.

Round 5, Pick 169:  Tay Gowan, CB, UCF

A very intriguing prospect, Tay Gowan has length to spare. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound cornerback is great in zone coverage and while he never put it all together, Gowan is more than capable of developing into a decent backup corner.

Cleveland did a great job bringing in Troy Hill but they do need to replace some of their reserves who left such as Kevin Johnson and Terrance Mitchell. Gowan helps them do just that.

Round 6, Pick 211: Ernest Jones, LB, South Carolina

There will be plenty of fans who want the Browns to go with a linebacker much earlier than this, but that just doesn’t feel likely. Andrew Berry and defensive coordinator Joe Woods seem to believe the position doesn’t require elite talent, so they haven’t put a lot of capital into filling the role.

It makes sense considering they want to focus on a 4-2-5 defense with more safeties on the field. Still, they can use some depth and their final pick in this mock is used to bring in South Carolina linebacker Ernest Jones. He racked up 101 tackles during those two years and could find a role as a weakside linebacker.

The 6-foot-2, 230-pounder started for two seasons with the Gamecocks and will likely need to prove himself as a special teams player to make the roster this coming season.
