The Cleveland Browns drafted their second linebacker this weekend, taking West Virginia’s Tony Field II at No. 153 in the fifth round

By now, anyone covering the Cleveland Browns during the 2021 NFL Draft is likely sounding like a broken record. General manager Andrew Berry continues to make the most out of every single pick and he did so again with his third selection on Saturday.

After already adding Cincinnati offensive tackle James Hudson at No. 110 and Tommy Togiai at No. 132, Cleveland was on the clock at No. 153. That selection was used to bring in West Virginia linebacker Tony Fields II.

Listed at 6-foot-1 and 222 pounds, Fields is built an awful lot like their other linebacker taken in this draft — Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah who they took at 52 out of Notre Dame. Also like JOK, Fields is an ideal fit in the 4-2-5 defensive scheme that Joe Woods operates.

Known for his speed and athleticism, Fields is able to cover sideline-to-sideline and has never had fewer than 88 tackles in a single season. Making that even more impressive, those 88 tackles happened in 2020 when West Virginia’s shortened season limited him to only nine games.

Fields started his collegiate career at Arizona where he played from 2017 through 2019. In those three seasons, he had 287 tackles, 8.5 sacks, and two picks. He was a graduate transfer so he didn’t have to sit out this past season.

Now that Cleveland has added JOK and Fields, it’s safe to say that Mack Wilson and Sione Takitaki are on the roster bubble. Berry had added the two linebackers this draft as well as Anthony Walker in free agency and Jacob Phillips in 2020.

The aforementioned linebackers were added by John Dorsey and could be in danger of losing out to players who were picked for this scheme.
