Cleveland Browns named top-5 landing spot Aaron Rodgers
By Zane Harris
Aaron Rodgers is disgruntled in Green Bay. There would be pros and cons for the Cleveland Browns to make a move.
It has been reported that Aaron Rodgers, quarterback of the Green Bay Packers is disgruntled with the team and does not want to return. This news shook the NFL and has general managers all over the league calling the Packers to see if a deal can get done. Should Andrew Berry throw the Cleveland Browns hat into the ring of the Rodgers sweepstakes as well?
Before really getting into this topic, it must be made clear that this piece is not declaring a trade must be made for Rodgers. However, depending on what the trade will cost the Browns and the goals of the team over the next few years, making the trade could be the best move.
Odds Shark has the Cleveland Browns slated in as tied for the 5th best odds to begin the 2021-2022 season with Aaron Rodgers on their roster.
This could mean that there is at least some mutual interest between Rodgers and the Browns.
A hypothetical package that may work out for both sides would have the Browns giving up Baker Mayfield, Austin Hooper, and draft capital in return for Aaron Rodgers and potential draft capital.
This is likely a better package than any other team trying to get Rodgers would be able to put together.
In terms of the deal, it should only be completed if the Browns are willing to go into a 100 percent win now mode.
This trade may shorten their championship window, however, it will make the window much bigger for the 2021-2022 season.
In terms of winning or losing the trade or the Browns, it will come down to how much draft capital they give up, how much draft capital they get back, and how much longer Rodgers can play at an elite level.
It’s clear that Mayfield is on his way to becoming a truly elite quarterback in the league. However, as it stands in this moment, Rodgers is a much better quarterback.
Despite being in his 15th season in the NFL last season, Rodgers still put together an MVP effort that culminated in a second round playoff exit to the eventual Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Rodgers had a career high in completion percentage, touchdowns, and QBR. This shows that he is still at the top of his game and shows no signs of slowing down.
We saw this season with the Buccaneers that having a veteran quarterback does not mean by any means you cannot win a Super Bowl or take down a juggernaut of a team like the Kansas City Chiefs.
With a roster of relatively no weaknesses like the Browns, making a trade for Aaron Rodgers could be enough to launch them into Super Bowl favorites for the 2021 season.
During his 12 years as a starter with the Packers, the Green Bay defense has ranked 10th or better in points and yards allowed in only two seasons.
In one of those two seasons, Rodgers brought home a Super Bowl trophy to Green Bay.
With the way that the Cleveland Browns defense is looking, if injuries are kept at bay, there’s no reason why they should not be a top 5-10 defense in the league this season.
Pairing this with the reigning league MVP and one of the most talented quarterbacks the league has seen in Aaron Rodgers, making the trade could be the best move for the Browns to make sure that they win a Super Bowl in the championship window of this roster.
But the also would have to be willing to give up on a younger, ascending star which might be too much compromise on their end.
