2. M.J. Stewart, Cornerback

One big mystery to me with the Cleveland Browns is how there’s this perception going around that their cornerback depth is suspect. Not everyone agrees with this, but there has been some rumbling on social media and even other DPD members have suggested as much.

Why these fans feel this way is confusing. Right now, the Browns have two first-round picks set to start in Denzel Ward and Greg Newsome II. Ward is already a Pro Bowl player and Newsome, who has yet to play in the NFL, has some impressive potential as well.

As for their slot cornerback, Troy Hill is going to be taking on that role after signing in the offseason. The former Los Angeles Rams defensive back is more than capable of playing outside, but he’s been a star playing in the slot.

Behind them is Greedy Williams, a former second-round pick who had first-round talent. Williams does have some questions as he’s battling back from a nerve injury but so far, things have been promising. On top of that, he’s the No. 4 corner now, so it’s not like he will be counted on as heavily as expected.

There’s also former Oklahoma State standout A.J. Green and Robert Jackson who got some important snaps last season. That’s not all either, as one player who keeps getting overlooked is M.J. Stewart, a former second-round pick for Tampa Bay who has 37 career games under his belt.

Unfortunately for Stewart, he could find himself in a tough spot as he battles for the fifth cornerback spot. Right now, that could be between him and Green but with Green being younger, he could be the one to get the call should the battle be close at all. And if we are being honest, Green would be a very talented option for the fifth spot.

Sure, there are injury concerns but you have to go far down the depth chart before finding cornerbacks who don’t have immense talent or early draft status.
