The Browns continue to take advantage of the veteran player market, this time picking up a kicker, Chase McLaughlin, from waivers. McLaughlin was picked up by the Cleveland Browns off of waivers by the New York Jets.

After finishing his college kicking career with the University of Illinois, he went undrafted in 2019 and eventually was signed in.

McLaughlin has a long history of bouncing around the league, including have short tenures with the Colts, the Chargers, and the Jaguars before signing with the Jets. He spent a year, or one season, with each of the five teams he has landed a roster spot with.

Despite his history of bouncing around the league, he has decent stats on his resume. He has made 22 of 28 attempted field goals and 31 of 32 extra point attempts. These stats come from a total of 15 regular season games that he was participate in throughout his career.

The signing of McLaughlin doesn’t come as a shock to many, as the Browns just recently waived kicker, Matt McCrane, from their roster. McCrane had spent the 2020 NFL season on Cleveland’s practice squad, but still served as motivation for starting kicker, Cody Parkey.

By adding McLaughlin to the roster it will serve as motivation and competition for Parkey as training camp nears. In the 2020 season, Parkey tallied up stats of 19 for 22 in field goal attempts and 43 of 47 extra point attempts. For the sake of Parkey’s often sketchy record, he was also 11 for 11 for all kicks attempted in the Browns short playoff run. The 11 made kicks were made up of three field goals and eight extra point attempts.

Parkey was resigned by Cleveland in March to a one year contract, but that will not prevent Chase McLaughlin from fighting for the starting position.
