Lend me your (dawg) ears while I sing you a song: Matching Music and the Browns
If everything goes according to plan, the city of Cleveland should be rocking this fall. On October 30th, the Cleveland-based Rock & Roll Hall of Fame will enshrine their 36th class of artists steps away from neighboring First Energy Stadium, home of the Cleveland Browns.
The star-studded event will serve as an opening act for the Halloween headliner awaiting Browns fans — a visit from the Steelers.
Coming off their first playoff appearance (and win) in 26 years, head-banging with Pittsburgh will likely be a good gauge of the 2021 team’s post-season chances. A return trip to the playoffs and a deep run would be music to the ears of Browns fans. At the very least, the orange and brown and their fans alike, are planning to drop some hall-worthy hits in 2021.
Speaking of hits, Hall of Fame inductees the Foo Fighters belted out their first Billboard top 100 song, “Learn to Fly”, in 1999 – the same year the Browns made their return to the NFL. Lead-singer Dave Grohl croons: “Fly along with me, I can’t quite make it alone.” Seems appropriate for a Browns team that will need a buy-in from the entire roster to fly as high as they want.
With that, here are other lyrics from the 90’s that can be associated with this Cleveland Browns team:
– Regarding his retooled roster, Kevin Stefanski: “No, I don’t want no scrubs.” — TLC, “No Scrubs”
– With a new contract looming, Baker Mayfield: “You gotta get your groove on, before you go get paid.” — Montell Jordan, “This Is How We Do It”
– With the OBJ impact in Cleveland minimal thus far, Jarvis Landry to Odell Beckham Jr: “It’s like you’re always stuck in second gear. When it hasn’t been your day, your week, your month, or even your year. But I’ll be there for you.” – The Rembrandts, “I’ll be there for you”
– Entering his second season of keeping opponents off the franchise QB, Jedrick Wills Jr: “Yo, I told you. You can’t touch this Why you standing there, man? You can’t touch this.” MC Hammer – “U Can’t Touch This”
– One of the most dominant defensive players in recent memory, Myles Garrett: “Nothing compares to you.” – Sinead O’Connor, “Nothing Compares 2 U”
– Upon finally agreeing to terms with the Browns, Jadeveon Clowney: “I saw the sign and it opened up my eyes.” – Ace of Base, “The Sign”
– Coming off another well regarded offseason of acquisitions, Andrew Berry: “He’s smart like a doctor with a real good rep.” – Salt-N-Peppa, “Whatta Man”
– No-nonsense bowling ball in the backfield, Nick Chubb: “I get knocked down, but I get up again. You are never gonna keep me down.” – Chumbawamba, “Tubthumping”
– Seemingly always making the clutch catch, Rashard Higgins: “What? You wanna ball with the kid? Watch your step, you might fall. Trying to do what I did.” – Will Smith, “Gettin’ jiggy wit it”
– Newbie with a rep for big hits, Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah: “For you, for me, come crash into me.”, – Dave Matthews Band,“Crash Into Me”
BONUS TRACKS
– If all goes well, Cleveland Browns team: “It’s something unpredictable but in the end is right. I hope you had the time of your life”. – Green Day , “Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)”
– Former Brown, current prisoner: Kellen Winslow Jr: “But I’m a creep. I’m a weirdo. What the hell am I doin’ here? I don’t belong here”. Radiohead, “Creep”
– With an unwillingness to accept responsibility and job prospects looking bleak, former head coach Hue Jackson: “Say no way, say no way-ah, no way. Na-na, why don’t you get a job?”- The Offspring, “Why Don’t You Get a Job”
– He of the pre-game logo dancing, Juju Smith-Schuster: “Hit me, baby, one more time”. – Britney Spears, “Baby One More Time”
Five months from now we’ll have an idea of if these Browns have true staying power, or if they are more of a one-hit-wonder.
