Cleveland Browns: 5 best remaining free agent fits ahead of 2021 camp
By Sam Penix
3. CB Brian Poole
Cleveland already landed one of the best slot corners in the league, so why not add another? It is quite odd that Poole is still on the market considering how good he’s been over the past two seasons. He earned $5 million in 2020 with the Jets, a one-year prove-it deal that was supposed to turn into a long-term contract with a new team. That has yet to happen, so perhaps he’d be willing to sign for cheap again and hit the market next year when the cap spikes considerably.
Unlike Dennard, Poole plays almost exclusively in the slot, which does limit what he can offer on defense, but he is also a special teams ace.
Hill will start for the Browns in the slot this season, but if he were to miss time (knock on wood), things get complicated. Neither Newsome nor Williams (if healthy) is a slot corner, and neither is Ward. Delpit (again, if healthy) and Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah would likely see snaps there, but neither is a true slot corner.
M.J. Stewart is the designated backup slot, but Poole would obviously provide a significant upgrade, and depending on the cost, would definitely be worth swapping roster spots for.
