Cleveland Browns edge rusher Myles Garrett “retires” from playing basketball

Cleveland Browns edge rusher Myles Garrett has been an avid basketball fan, and pick-up player, for quite some time now.

Every offseason we get a new basketball hype video, or several, via Twitter or Instagram from the man himself. It appears to be no more as Garrett has been told by the Browns organization that he is now “retired.”

Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski commented on Garrett’s pick-up play saying that he’s proud of him, but he’s done.

Garrett had made headlines throughout the offseason with his lucrative basketball hype videos, often setting Twitter a-buzz from fans both excited and concerned. The Cleveland Browns edge rusher implied his potential return to basketball, and other future endeavors, however.

"“I feel it’s more like a [Michael] Jordan retirement. Now I got to go back to what I’m good at, what I usually do, playing football, rush the passer, stopping the run. But you never know. I might go back to basketball, I might go play baseball, see if I can get on a team. But there’s more on the horizon right now [with football. I got to get back to what my main focus is.” — Garrett said via Jake Trotter of ESPN"

Garrett has been playing basketball for years. He played high school ball at James Martin High School in Arlington, Texas where he helped lead the team to a 45-13 record in the two seasons that he played.

With the NFL season rapidly approaching and minicamp almost here, it’s understandable that the Browns want him to steer clear from any non-football activities that may lead to injury.

The Browns are primed and ready for a run at the Super Bowl in 2021 and they need Myles Garrett healthy and ready to go in order to get there. But the good news is, he will have more help around him this season than ever before.

Cleveland added Jadeveonb Clowney and Takk McKinley in the offseason, giving them three first-round picks at defensive end ‚— two of which were No. 1 overall selections.

Garrett should finally get less attention from opposing linemen due to the influx of talent which will only help him as he seeks to take the Browns defense to the next level.
