Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield (6) looks to make a hand off to a running back under pressure from defensive end Jadeveon Clowney during an NFL football practice at the team’s training facility, Wednesday, June 16, 2021, in Berea, Ohio.Browns 1 /

1. Baker Mayfield, Quarterback

As a Cleveland Browns fan, the one thing I have wanted more than anything since 1999 is a long-term, franchise quarterback. I’ll admit, I think Baker Mayfield is that guy, but we also must be realistic. He is a top 8-12 quarterback in the league, he is not top five.

Top 8-12 is perfect, and in the Kevin Stefanski system this team can win a Super Bowl with Mayfield, but he can’t carry a team on his back like a Patrick Mahomes or Russell Wilson, and therefore can’t be paid that way.

Jared Goff is the prime example. He was a good quarterback in a perfect system. They paid him huge money, couldn’t surround him with talent, and then ended up trading him. Mayfield is much better than Goff in my opinion, but the Browns must be careful with Mayfield.

Give him a $25-30 million per year contract with a ton of guarantees and tell him to keep making his money on commercials and let us build talent around you. Look at what Tom Brady did for so long in New England. Being paid less to have elite defenses are wide receivers like Randy Moss to throw to.

Mayfield has proven enough to me to get this deal done sooner than later. Look for Berry to get something inked before the end of the 2021 season, and look for him to earn every penny with another fantastic year in the Stefanski system.
