Cleveland Browns: 5 players who could still surprisingly be cut
By Sam Penix
1. S Sheldrick Redwine
The Cleveland secondary has one of the best starting lineups in the league, at least on paper. The depth is a different story, however. Despite a rash of injuries to the safety group, Joe Woods turned to Redwine only as a last resort. He played fewer snaps in 2020 than he did as a rookie, and while he displayed some nice flashes, the lows on his tape occurred far too frequently. The 2019 fourth-round pick has plenty of physical talent, but has yet to put it all together on a consistent basis.
Georgia’s Richard LeCounte was a sixth-round pick this year, and is a much better player than his draft position would suggest. LeCounte’s presence on the roster doesn’t automatically push Redwine off; with how much Joe Woods plans to use three-safety looks, keeping five, or potentially even six would be a good idea. John Johnson III, Ronnie Harrison Jr., and Grant Delpit (pending health) will see the most snaps on defense.
Redwine will need to continue contributing on special teams (especially with the departure of Thomas), and he must improve in the mental aspects of the safety position if he hopes to earn Woods’ trust and thus a larger role.
