Cleveland Browns: 10 trade targets ahead of training camp
By Sam Penix
3. Harrison Smith, S, Minnesota Vikings
Smith has been one of the league’s best safeties for a very long time, and hasn’t shown any signs of letting up anytime soon. He is entering the final year of his contract at a modest $10.2 million cap hit. The Browns, on paper, are pretty set at the position, but Ronnie Harrison is also playing on an expiring contract, and Grant Delpit, while an elite talent, is coming off a serious Achilles injury.
The Cleveland defensive coordinator likes to deploy three safeties quite often, and Cleveland lacks a true deep angel safety. Smith is a hybrid, but he can fill that role. It doesn’t seem like a trade the Browns would make, but adding Smith to the defense would be huge.
2. Justin Reid, S, Houston Texans
Reid was a player that made a lot of sense as a deadline target for the Browns in 2020. The Texans are in perhaps the worst situation in the league, and just need draft picks. They may not re-sign Reid, who is a very underrated player, and that could give a team like Cleveland the chance to swoop in and grab a long-term defensive chess piece for relatively cheap. Reid is a versatile defender who can provide run support in the box and cover from the slot and back deep.
